Daggers Doubles up on Demetrius
Kootsville Tech quarterback Harlan Daggers was awarded the Demetrius Award by the Illegitimate Press as the SCAB's most valuable player for the 2018 season. He was the winner of the award last year and the man to beat for the award this year. Considered the player with the biggest impact on the league during Kootsville Tech's reign over the championship the last three years, Daggers took the lead in the passing composite about the fourth week in the season and never looked back. It looked like he would run away the award, but other players closed on him with some surprising achievements by seaon's end.
Daggers was less than three points shy of the 900 mark for the passing composite, more than 100 points above the next closest, Cretin quarterback Lee van Dye. Daggers led the nation in passing yardage, touchdown passes, and touchdown pass to interception ratio. But Van Dye led in net completions (the base for the passing composite) and competion percentage, topping 70%. In the quarterback composite, which is the sum of rushing yardage and passing composite, Dye was the SCAB leader, with about 150 more yards rushing than Daggers, and was named the All-SCAB quarterback.
Daggers was actualy 3rd in QB composite, as Mountain Valley QB Hugh Jorgen rushed for 702 yards, good for 20th in the league in rushing. The twist here is that Daggers is much more a rushing QB than either Van Dye or Jorgen.
Holy Grail QB Isaiah Prayer was also raised in the speculation. The top recruit payed off immediatley by leading Holy Grail to the Pack championship his first year, and was thus considered as instrumental and valuable for the team's accomplishments as Daggers is for the Spitters. Running back Bubba Butt, the SCAB rushing leader, helped Our Lady back to the Non-Conference title, and RB Ezekial Powers was considered the most valuable of Clan champion UFO.
But when it came to the final tally, none of them could top Daggers for the award. He topped the overall ballot and the player of the week awards also kept him comfortably ahead. Two years ago, Daggers lost perhaps the most controversial tally ever, when the player of the week awards boosted Bunyan QB Hugh Jasso over Daggers despite the latter's top spot on the overal ballot. That year Daggers had also shattered the passing composite record becoming the first QB to crack the 1,000 mark.
Daggers is the fifth repeat recipient of the award since it was league-wide. He joins quarterbacks Lance Boils of Puke, Payne Indiass of DeSade S&M, E. Chitton Dye of Cretin and Constantine Angst of Northwestsoutheastern as two-time winners. Kootsville Tech running back Jack Rabbit also won the award twice, but the first time it was only given in the Little 10.
