It wasn't pretty. It wasn't one of the displays of Our Lady offense more typical of the last two seasons. A year ago, defense was the Achilles heel for the Johns in their championship loss to Puke. So this time, while their offense sputtered, the Johns' defensive performance got them the prize.
All-SCAB QB Holly Fame, who may have been robbed of the Demetrius Award considering his phenomenal regular season, completed just 7 of 24 passes for 107 yards. But he ran for 87 yards and came up with instrumental plays not only on drives to score, but to keep possession in what became a tight game.
RB Love Macon scored both of Our Lady's TDs. His 16-yard burst for the first TD of the game in the second quarter to put Our Lady in charge was set up by his own reception on a 35-yard pass play. His 4-yard run for a TD was the clincher, the victory blow after a Bleeding Heart TD drive had made Our Lady vulnerable at 13-7.
But the defensive plays were the biggest for Our Lady. The Johns blocked two Bleeding Heart punts, one to end the first drive of the game and set up Our Lady's opening field goal, the other on the Dove possession following their scoring one in the fourth quarter that set up Macon's clincher. That second block was crucial, as Bleeding Heart, down 13-0 and apparently out of it at the half, appeared to have taken control in the third quarter. Bleeding Heart also fumbled 3 times, twice in the third quarter to kill drives.
The Doves played some defense, too, of course, as Our Lady passing for just 107 yards demonstrates. Our Lady had to settle for a field goal following that first blocked punt, which had given them possession on the Bleeding Heart 21. The Doves stalled another Our Lady drive at the end of the first half, forcing them to settle for another field goal. In the third quarter, the defense began to pay off as Bleeding Heart's offense took over. Bleeding Heart began a drive at their own 12 that ended at the Our Lady 21 when they turned over possession on downs. After the two fumbles, the Doves drove 84 yards in 10 plays in the fourth quarter scoring on a 5-yard pass from freshman QB Felix Post to WR I.B. Long. The tide had turned and Bleeding Heart was in striking distance. Until the blocked punt on their next possession and the Macon score.
Long was the standout in the game, and would've been the star but for the loss. He was the weapon Bleeding Heart wanted and Our Lady had to fear, catching 11 passes for 127 yards and 1 TD. No one else in the game caught more than 3 passes.
Bleeding Heart RB Gibson Gibbs, however, also contributed some important plays and 91 total yards, 57 rushing and 34 receiving. That matched the production of Macon, who rushed for 46 and caught 2 passes for 45 yards.
Post is accomplished just for leading his team to the championship game as a freshman, and holds promise for the Bleeding Heart future. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 178 yards and 1 TD, but was sacked or tackled for a loss 5 times, another coup by the Our Lady defense.
Our Lady yielded Puke its fifth championship in as many attempts last year, but this time handed Bleeding Heart its fourth loss in as many championship games. The Doves lost three straight championship games from 1988-90 before returning for this one.
And finally, after two long seasons as the league's predominate team, Our Lady claims their second championship. Their first was in 1995 over Kootsville Tech.
